Under Section 41 of the HFEA Act 1990, it is illegal to sell human gametes (semen) in the UK. Yet increasingly men using internet sperm donation websites are financially charging women in exchange for supplying fresh sperm. Not only is this a criminal offence, it also constitutes gross exploitation of women who may already be experiencing the health inequalities of being unable to afford DI (donor insemination) through the safer route of a fertility clinic.
